Tradie Burnout: The Warning Signs Nobody Talks About

WellbeingAugust 2026Jason Darmanin

Burnout in the trades doesn’t look like a breakdown. It looks like a bloke who’s “fine.” He’s just short with the kids lately. Sleeps badly. Can’t remember his last real day off, quotes at 10pm, and the job that used to feel like pride now just feels like pressure. If that’s uncomfortably familiar, keep reading, because this is the page nobody clicks until they need it.

Why trade business owners burn out

Running a trade business means being the tradesman, the estimator, the debt collector, the scheduler and the complaints department, usually all before dinner. There’s no HR department, no annual leave that doesn’t cost you money, and an industry culture that treats pushing through as a personality trait. The physical work is hard, but it’s the mental load, the quoting, the chasing, the responsibility for other people’s wages, that grinds people down.

The warning signs worth taking seriously

  • Everything makes you angry: clients, traffic, the family, small stuff that never used to register.
  • Sleep is broken and the 3am maths has moved in.
  • You’ve stopped doing the things that used to recharge you: footy, fishing, mates, the gym.
  • Every job feels like a threat instead of an opportunity.
  • You’re working more hours and somehow getting less done.
  • You keep saying “it’ll settle down after this job.” It never does.

The part that’s a business problem

Here’s what we’ve learnt backing tradies: a good chunk of what feels like a mental health problem is actually a business design problem. Underpricing creates the pressure. No systems create the chaos. No boundaries create the 10pm quoting. You can’t meditate your way out of a business that structurally requires you to work 70 hours. Fixing the pricing, the systems and the workload isn’t separate from fixing the burnout. It IS fixing the burnout, or at least the part of it that’s within reach.

The part that isn’t

And some of it is bigger than business, which is why our health and wellbeing support connects tradies with real professionals: counsellors and physios who understand the industry, without judgment and without the fluff. Talking to someone is not weakness. In an industry that loses too many good people to silence, it might be the strongest move you make. If things are heavy right now, ring Lifeline on 13 11 14, any time, or talk to your GP.

And if the burnout is the business-shaped kind, book the free session. Telling someone who gets it exactly where things are at is, on its own, a weight off.
