The best marketing machine in the trades is the job you just finished. Before you spend a dollar on ads, understand this: most good trade businesses are built on referrals and repeat work, and both of those are things you can engineer, not just hope for.
Make the referral happen instead of hoping
A happy client tells nobody by default. Not because they don’t rate you, but because life moves on. The fix is embarrassingly simple: ask. At the moment you hand over the finished job, when the client is happiest, say some version of “if you know anyone who needs this kind of work, I’d love an intro.” Then a week later, ask for a Google review with a direct link so it’s one tap. Tradies who build these two asks into every single job handover build a review base and a referral stream that ads can’t buy.
Google is your new word of mouth
When someone gets your name from a mate, the next thing they do is Google you. What they find decides whether they call. That means three things need to be right: a Google Business Profile with real reviews and photos of your actual work, a website that looks like you take the trade seriously, and a phone number that gets answered or called back same day. None of this is advanced marketing. It’s just making sure the reputation you’ve already earned is visible.
Photograph everything
You finish impressive work every week and the evidence lives on job sites nobody will ever visit. Take before-and-after photos of every job, even the ordinary ones. They feed your Google profile, your website, your quotes and, if you use it, your social media. A camera roll of real finished work beats a folder of stock photos every time, and clients can tell the difference instantly.
Stay in front of past clients
Your cheapest future job is from someone who already trusts you. A short message to past clients when you’ve got capacity, a reminder when seasonal work comes around, a genuine check-in a year after a big job. Most tradies finish a job and vanish forever. The ones who stay in touch get the next job, and the renovation after that, without quoting against anyone.
When ads DO make sense
Paid ads work when the foundations are already solid: your pricing has margin (so a lead is worth paying for), your reviews are strong (so clicks convert), and you can actually take the work. Ads poured onto a business without those things just buys expensive phone calls. Foundations first, amplification second.
